Tachyon Graphics Monitor (TGM) FAQ
Leveraging over a decade of high-end motherboard design expertise, TYAN engineers have built the FIRST ATI chipset-based graphics cards to feature hardware monitoring via a
user-friendly software GUI. The Tachyon Graphics Monitor (TGM) is a software utility for Windows® that was specially designed for the Tachyon Series Graphics Cards.
- How do I know which TGM features are supported by my Tachyon Graphics Card?
TYAN engineers continue to expand TGM functionality in order to improve the feature set of Tachyon graphics cards. While the latest Tachyon models benefit from these new
developments, not all new features are backwards compatible with older models. Please consult the following matrix to find out which features are supported by your Tachyon graphics card.

- What does it mean to use a "third party heatsink"? If I use a third party heatsink, can I still use the TGM?
Although TYAN has built in a new fan control function into TGM that allows users to reduce the fan speed, we understand that there are still those users who want
a completely silent system. These users wish to remove the stock heatsink on their graphics card in order to use a fanless heatsink to further reduce noise in their system.
If you are one of these users and want to change your heatsink but would still like to monitor VPU and memory temperature and voltage, please do the steps below:
** TYAN does not recommend that you use a fanless heatsink if you wish to
overclock your graphics card. Please note that for those users who wish to use a third party heatsink, we cannot warranty your product once the original heatsink is removed.
- Install the TGM version that is appropriate for your O/S
- Disable the hardware monitor box in the Main Window
- Click on the "Using 3rd Party Heatsink" box
- Enable the hardware monitor
- How can I tell if my Tachyon G9700 PRO supports TGM or not?
As a newcomer to the graphics card market, TYAN knew it had to make a splash by adding unique features to its products. To date, TYAN has released two
versions of the Tachyon G9700 PRO to the market. The first version, which was released in late 2002, already improved on the ATI reference design by introducing
a more sophisticated and efficient heatsink for eager overclocking enthusiasts. TYAN, renowned for its engineering prowess, refused to stop there. Even as the
first version was being released, the engineering team was already working on a new version capable of hardware monitoring. TYAN proudly released this second
version of the Tachyon G9700 PRO, fully equipped with hardware monitoring in January 2003.
The pictures below show the difference between the two versions of Tachyon
G9700 PRO. The first version of the card (left) does not support TGM, whereas the second version (right) does support TGM. As you can see, on the TGM
version, the fan wires clearly connect on the right hand side on the board.
Furthermore, if your card supports TGM, then there should be a Tachyon Graphics Monitor sticker (shown below) on the front of your retail box.
- What should I do if I am experiencing problems with the TGM software?
If you are experiencing any problems with the TGM software, please try these troubleshooting tips:
- Make sure you have the latest version of the TGM software installed.
- Consult the latest version of the TGM manual to find out how to use the utility.
- Do not open the TGM window while using graphics intensive applications. Although the window is not open, the TGM program will alert you via a
beeping alarm should your VPU or memory temperature exceed the safe range.
