Tyan s8026 Single Socket AMD EPYC Server Motherboard

Tyan's Tomcat SX S8026 is a 1U rack optimized AMD EPYC (Formerly codenamed "Naples") motherboard in an EATX form factor. Harnessing the power of a single AMD SP3 socket, the board is designed to deliver 2P performance within a 1P footprint. The motherboard is designed for traditional 2P workloads such as fast cloud storage, real time analytics, big data, e-commerce, and video streaming applications. It features support for high speed NVMe deployment with 16 PCIe lanes available near the front of the motherboard over two 80-Pin Oculink connectors. By adopting an industry standard EATX form factor, the s8026 allows customers to deploy it with minimal integration efforts into existing chassis designs.

AMD EPYC 14nm CPU

The AMD EPYC processor offers the highest possible performance from a single CPU socket, including:

Dual Socket Feature Set

Traditionally, the only way to deploy a large number of PCIe devices has been to select a dual-socket motherboard even if the compute demands of the server was low. Tyan has targeted these applications with the AMD EPYC platform by supporting up to 124 PCIe lanes and 8 memory channels in a single-socket platform. Significant savings can be had both in CPU cost and power consumption by migrating workloads to a single socket AMD EPYC platform.

The s8026 motherboard was designed from the ground up to take full advantage of AMD’s Single-Socket I/O capabilities. The s8026-LE is a cost-down version of the motherboard intended for 1U server deployments without a ton of NVMe requirements. The following slots are available within a 1U chassis:

High Expandability

Tyan's Tomcat SX S8026 motherboard offers maximum expandability within a standard 12” x 13” SSI EEB form factor. This offers outstanding expansion capabilities in standard 1U server enclosures. A commodity 1U server chassis can support three PCIe x16 slots:
  • (1) PCIe x16 OCP LAN Mezzanine (Supporting network speeds up to 100Gb/s)
  • (2) PCIe x16 FH/HL cards (In Left and Right 1U riser cards)

Things get more interesting in a 2U chassis as the motherboard features a pair of PCIe x24 slots. Tyan has a pair of available 2U riser cards with a MUX that support either x16/x0/x8 or x8/x8/x8 support, allowing each card to support up to one x16 slot and a x8 slot, or up to three x8 depending on configuration.



Outstanding SATA Performance

Each of the SATA ports on the AMD EPYC platform are derived from a PCIe x1 link. Unlike competing architectures which impose a performance bottleneck on the SATA controller, every SATA port on the AMD EPYC die get full SATA 6G throughput. This means that every single SATA port is fully capable of 550MB/s+ simultaneously. Early performance testing has shown total aggregate SATA performance in excess of 8GB/s across the board's 18 SATA ports.

Up to 18 SATA Ports

Some of the EPYC I/O ports can be remapped to support either PCIe or SATA ports. The s8026’s BIOS supports I/O remapping on a pair of Oculink connectors, allowing the platform to support up to 18 SATA ports without an additional HBA.

180W CPU Support

AMD's top bin EPYC CPU supports up to 32 CPU cores and draws upwards of 180W. The s8026 VRM design can support the full range of AMD EPYC CPUs all the way up to their top bin 180W parts.


IPMI 2.0 with Redfish Support

Featuring AMI MegaRAC firmware, the s8026 motherboard offers support for IPMI 2.0 with iKVM and the DMTF Redfish management protocol.
